Sight Distance
It is defined as length of road that is visible to the driver at any instance. It is actual distance a driver with eye level at specified height above the road surface has visibility of any stationary or moving object of specified height ahead.
Restrictions to Sight Distance
It is defined as length of road that is visible to the driver at any instance. It is actual distance a driver with eye level at specified height above the road surface has visibility of any stationary or moving object of specified height ahead.
Restrictions to Sight Distance
- When line of sight is obstructed by any object at inner side of curve at horizontal curve.
- The line of sight is obstructed by road surface of summit curve in case of vertical curve.
- In case f uncontrolled section, when a driver approaches from one of roads has sight of another vehicle coming from another road. Both are proceedings towards same intersection.
In first two cases, sight distance is measured along centre line of curve in both horizontal and vertical curve. While in third case, sight distance is measured from the mark where both drivers see each other to intersection point.
Type of Sight Distance
- Stopping sight or Absolute minimum sight distance
- Safe overtaking sight or Passing sight distance
- Safe sight distance for entering into uncontrolled intersection
Apart from these three, IRC (Indian Road Congress) consider following two case also:
Intermediate sight distance
When overtaking sight distance cannot be provided, intermediate sight should be provided. The magnitude of Intermediate sight distance is twice of stopping sight distance.
Head-light sight distance
It is distance visible to a driver during night under the illumination of vehicle head lights.
