How its made- Plastic Roads in India

Slowly Plastic become an integral part of life. From day to night, we always use some material or thing made of plastic. It may be a plastic bag, toothbrush, water bottle or other storage container. As we known plastic is non biodegradable material and has adverse affect on life.
Plastic in sea has ill effect on sea. It creates pollution and affect marine life which result extinctions of some species. Now scientists are experimenting to reuse plastic in an innovative way.
Prof Rajagopalan Vasudevan, Professor of Chemistry at Thiagarajar College of Engineering, Madurai, India ( also popular by name 'Plastic man' ) came up a unique solution. He used plastic with asphalt in road construction.

Process

The process started by shredding plastic in particular size using a shredding machine.
Then aggregates mix are heated upto 165°c and transferred it into mixing chamber and then bitumen is heated to 160°c which result in binding. The whole process take place under monitored conditions.
Shredded Aggregates then mixed with plastic waster. It get uniformly coated within 30 to 60 seconds and provide an oily look. The aggregate coated with plasti  is mixed with hot bitumen and these mixture is used for road construction. The road laying temperature should lies between 110°c to 120°c. Then roller is used for compaction.
For every one kilo of aggregate, 50gm of asphalt is required. Out of which 10 percent can be replaced by plastic waste. It reduces the plastic waste.
Plastic watse road has increased the strength of road and reduces its fatigue. These roads have better resistance to wear and tear, weather conditions like rain or frost action. These type of road are gaining more popularity in India as it reduces the construction cost, environmental friendl, has more life and strength than normal asphalt road.
