Specfic Gravity of Fine Aggregate

Apparatus

  • Water
  • Pycnometer
  • Fine Aggregate sample
  • Weigh machine

Theory

Specfic Gravity is normally defined as ratio of mass of material of a given volume and mass of equal volume of water.
Specific Gravity of cement is generally used in Concrete Mix design for moisture determination and quality of aggregate.

Procedure
  • Take sample of dry fine aggregate weigh 500g and fill it in Pycnometer
  • Then fill Pycnometer full with water and cover it with conical cap (having a small hole at top).
  • Slightly move the Pycnometer at inclined position such that all air bubbles get escaped.
  • Then again fill till water level reached at hole of conical cap.
  • Clean the Pycnometer from outside with clean and dry cloth.
  • Weight the Pycnometer and let it be W1.
  • Then empty the Pycnometer and clean it.
  • Again fill completely Pycnometer till hole of conical cap.
  • Again weight the Pycnometer with full of water and let ot be W2.
  • Weight the empty Pycnometer let it be W3.

Observation

Mass of empty dry flask = W gm
Mass of flask + water= W1 gm
Mass of saturated surface dry sample= W2 gm
Mass of flask+ water+ sample= W3 gm

Calculation

Specfic gravity of fine aggregate = W2/[ W2- (W3-W1)]
