Specfic Gravity of Cement

Apparatus
  • Weighing machine
  • Specfic Gravity bottle
  • Kerosene free from water
  • Constant water bath

Theory
Specfic Gravity is normally defined as ratio of mass of material of a given volume and mass of equal volume of water. Specfic Gravity of any construction material is calculated because Torque or Horsepower required for mixing to get desired result depends upon it.
Procedure
  • Weigh the specfic gravity bottle dry. Let the mass of empty flask be W1.
  • Fill the bottle with distilled water and weigh the bottle filled with water. Let mass be W2.
  • Wipe dry the specfic gravity bottle and fill it with Kerosene and weigh. Let this mass be W3.
  • Pour some of kerosene out and introduce a weighed quantity of cement (about 50gms) into the bottle. Roll the bottle gently in inclined position until no air bubble left in flask and weigh be W4.
  • Let weigh of mass of cement: W5

Observations

Mass of empty bottle=  W1 gm
Mass of bottle+ water= W2 gm
Mass of bottle +kerosene= W3 gm
Mass of cement + bottle + kerosene= W4 gm
Mass of cement= W5 gm

Calculations

 Specfic gravity of Kerosene:
s=( W3-W4)/(W2-W1)

Specfic gravity of Cement:
S= [ W5 (W3-W1)/(W5+W3-W4)(W2-W1)]
