Brick: It is smallest structural unit of predetermined rectangular shape made up of moulding clay. Brick process includes preparation of clay, Moulding, Drying and Burning of bricks.
Types of Brick:
1.On basis of Size of Brick
a.Traditional Brick: The size of brick is not standardised and vary from place to place.Generally length varies from 20 to 25 cm and width from 10 to 13 cm and thickness from 5 to 7.5cm. The adopted size is 23cm×11.4cm×7.6cm approx.
b.Modular Brick: The size of brick laid down by Bureau of Indian Standard Institution. The actual size of brick is 19×9×9cm and nominal size is 20×10×10cm includes the mortar thickness. Any brick of same shape and size as standard laid by BIS is known as Modular Bricks.
2. On basis of Quality of Bricks
a. First class brick: These type of brick are strictly stick to size of 19×9×9cm actual size of brick. It is of uniform size, uniform colour and well burnt. It also have straight edges, even surface and free of cracks, chips, flaws etc. It should not absorb water more than 20% of their weight when immersed in water for 1 day. It is used for superior work.
b. Second class brick: Second class bricks have size also stick to 19×9×9cm actual size. The only difference is it is of irregular in shape and colour. It may have hair cracks. It should not absorb water more than 22% of weight of brick when immersed in water for 1 day. It is used where it is provided with a coat of plaster.
c. Third class brick: It is of irregular in shape, size and colour. It also have irregular in edges. It should not absorb more than 25% of weight of brick. It create dull sound when struck together. It is used for unimportant and temporary structure.
